It's an age old question, especially in this area. It's safe to say, in Western Kentucky, it doesn't take much, but in the Northeast, where 2-3 feet of snow has fallen lately, you might be surprised. Take a look.

Reddit user Alexandr Truebetskoy created the map and as you can see for here and for most of the Southern US, any snow and sometimes the mere prediction of snow is enough to call off school. You'll also notice Hawaii falls into the "any snow" category??? Yet, any snow that falls there is usually where no one lives, as in high altitude, volcano territory.

For our neighbors in New England, New York, Canada, and in bigger cities like Chicago, there are many more resources for snow removal, thus they rarely cancel school. I always wondered why the kids in A Christmas Story never got a snow day. The story is set in the Midwest, but it's never specifically mentioned where. School officials in the Midwest take into consideration wind chill more than snowfall. And again, this map covers snowfall only, NOT ice. I'm waiting to see that map.
