BEFORE FILING TAXES: What Illinois Unemployment Claimants Need to Know
Walgreens announced it will eliminate 469 positions across Illinois, primarily affecting its corporate support center and field leadership roles.
The cuts mark one of the largest recent workforce reductions by a major employer in Illinois, and in a statement, Walgreens said the decision is part of its broader plan to simplify operations and sharpen its focus on improving the in-store customer experience.
Corporate Restructuring Under Private Equity
The layoffs come during sweeping changes as Sycamore Partners completed its acquisition of Walgreens in August 2025.
Before the buyout, Walgreens announced plans in October 2024 to close 1,200 stores over 3 years, including about 500 that were set for closure in 2025. However, some reports indicate store closures will be scaled back this year, limiting them to fewer than 100 stores in 2026.

Last October, Walgreens also cut 80 corporate jobs in Chicago and Deerfield, which signaled signs of upcoming consolidation.
Watchdog Raises Concerns
Private Equity Stakeholder Project (PESP) is a non-profit corporate watchdog based out of Chicago, and they warn that these layoffs could have a ripple effect for workers and patients.
These layoffs underscore the risks that come with turning essential healthcare providers into private equity portfolio companies. What happens next at Walgreens will matter not just for investors, but for workers, patients, and communities across the country. -Jim Baker, Executive Director of PESP
Questions remain about how workforce reductions at Walgreens will affect service levels and long-term operations across Illinois.
