This Indiana Drive-In Allows Four-Legged Friends to Join You for Movie Night
If you're from the Southern Indiana - Western Kentucky area, chances are you've been to the Holiday Drive-In. It's been around since 1955 and is still a beloved spot in our community. You know, the whole drive-in movie thing—it's kind of a rarity these days, but this place has kept that magic alive. It's actually one of the oldest drive-ins in the whole country.
Back in 2013, they almost had to shut down because they needed new projectors and money was tight. But, thankfully, they pulled through. And this past spring, the Holiday Drive-In was one of the top drive-ins in the country. Pretty cool, right?
Every summer without fail, we make it a tradition to grab a huge bucket of fried chicken, load up the truck with pillows and blankets, and head over to the drive-in early to snag a good spot. Also, every summer without fail, I remember that I really need to invest in a good terrestrial radio boombox setup so that I don't have to restart my truck 10 times through the night.
I've been to the drive-in every single summer of my life. So, imagine my surprise when I found out that one of my family members has really been missing out.
Are Dogs Allowed at the Holiday Drive-In in Reo, IN?
The other day, I'm scrolling through Facebook, and I see this picture in one of my groups. There's this adorable boxer dog chilling between some legs, all staring at the screen at the Holiday Drive-In in Reo. Polly Hile had posted in the ITV volunteer group that she took her rescue Zeus to see Despicable Me 4 and Jaws.
And I'm like, hold up—dogs at the drive-in? Since when?
So, of course, I head over to their website to find out what's what—and turns out, they've got all the info right there.
You come to the drive-in movies to have a good time. We’re in favor of that! The drive-in is a family venue with lots of space to enjoy some summer fun in the great outdoors. You’re welcome to bring your pet, but please pick up after them and remain with them at all times. Indiana state law forbids pets and smoking within 8 feet of the concession stands.
Wow, can you believe it? After 40 years of going to the drive-in, I just found out dogs are welcome! My own dog is a bit of a barker, so I'm not sure he'd be the best movie date without his trusty bark collar or maybe just staying home altogether. But thinking about all the other well-behaved dogs out there—how cool would it be for them to join in on a family movie night? It's like a whole new world of possibilities opened up at the drive-in.
Oh, and when I was reading the rules I also learned that they will charge you double if you are caught sneaking into the drive-in... Now I know!
