I drive past the Masonville Fire Department everyday, so it does my heart good to see great things happening for the unit and, by extension, the Daviess County citizens it serves.

2024 marks the inaugural year of the State Farm Good Neighbor Firefighter Safety Program, and, in celebration (among other reasons), it is awarding 50 grants to local fire departments. Well...that WAS the plan. Because of the overwhelming response to the gesture, State Farm has DOUBLED its commitment, and now 100 local departments will reap the benefits.

Upon receiving the news, the Masonville Fire Department issued a news release in order to share the good news:

Just in time for Fire Prevention Week October 6-12, Masonville Fire Department is excited to announce that it is one of 100 volunteer fire departments across the nation to receive a $10,000 grant through State Farm Good Neighbor Firefighter Safety Program. In collaboration with the National Volunteer Fire Council (NVFC), State Farm has awarded $1 million in grants to help local fire departments obtain needed equipment to increase their responders safety, effectiveness, and to serve their community.

The Masonville Fire Department's coverage area is approximately 74 to 75 square miles, encompassing southeastern Daviess County and a little of northern Ohio County. The department responds to roughly 700 calls each year.

Recognizing the tight budgets on which a majority of small fire departments operate, State Farm sprung into action. And, n addition to the grants, State Farm also provided all applicants with membership to the National Volunteer Fire Council.

The team is constantly out in the department's parking lot engaging in some form of training. Honk to show your support the next time you pass. (At a reasonable hour, of course.)
