Owensboro will soon be home to a brand new women's and children's emergency shelter called My Sister's Keeper. This morning, that facility (which is the creation and dream of my morning show co-host Angel Welsh) got a huge boost to kick start its brand new fundraising campaign.

Wednesday, at the shelter's location at 2820 West 4th Street here in Owensboro, My Sister's Keeper welcomed its first "Corporate Keeper." Independence Bank presented the Board of Directors with a check for $20,000.

That donation serves as the spark in a huge community-wide fundraiser called the Keeper Campaign, which invites and encourages individuals, community leaders and local businesses to contribute to the mission.  The Keeper Campaign is now officially underway.

And there's more exciting news to share as well. At this morning's news conference, we got a look at the brand new architectural renderings of how the shelter will look once it's completed.

Construction on the facility, Phase One, is set to begin soon and got an additional boost recently from the Marilyn & William Young Foundation, which supplied My Sister's Keeper with a $35,000 grant. That money will be used specifically to complete the restrooms, showers and warming kitchen as depicted in the rendering above.

My Sister's Keeper's mission is "to improve the lives of women and children of all ages experiencing homelessness by providing emergency shelter, basic temporary needs, safety, support, education, tools and resources that empower them to improve the quality of their lives, help to equip them with the skills to achieve self-sufficiency and build safe, secure lives."

And you can now help support that mission with the rollout of the Keeper Campaign.
