If you have a pair of shoes you were thinking about getting rid of, here's a place that will take them.  As a matter of fact, the Owensboro Museum of Science and History will not only take them, they'll put them to tremendous use.

The museum's SHOE Us The Love campaign is currently underway and they're seeking to collect as many pairs of shoes as possible from now through October 31st.  The goal?  To send the gently worn, used and new shoes to Haiti, where they will be recycled and repurposed for a variety of uses: sandals, flooring, entrepreneurial endeavors and more.  Plus, for the museum, it's a win/win situation.  Once they collect the shoes and send them to Funds2Orgs, that agency will issue a check to the Owensboro Museum of Science and History, who will then use those funds to make improvements to the interior of the museum and its exhibits.

The shoe collection got underway the first week of September and, according to board member Mary Kinney, it has been really successful thus far.  However, there's still plenty of time for you to be involved and donate as well.

The donation locations are as follows:

Owensboro Museum of Science and History (122 E Second Street)

Legends Bar & Grill (on Hwy 54)

Legends Outfitters (Park Plaza Drive)

Shoe Stop (Wesleyan Park Plaza)

Fast Fuel (HWY 144)

Planet Fitness (Hwy 54)

According to Kathy Olson, Director of the Owensboro Museum of Science and History, "Approximately six million shoes end up in a landfill every year." So, if you have extra shoes sitting in the bottom of your closet, Kathy and the museum board hope you consider donating them. The SHOE Us The Love shoe drive will give your shoes a second chance and truly make a difference in the lives of people around the world.
