Now, you may be wondering what the WBKR Road War is. Basically, it's a road rally that sends you driving around town in search of checkpoints. At those checkpoints, you're presented with clues and riddles that you have to solve to find your next checkpoint. Eventually (well, hopefully), you'll arrive at our finish line. There, the team that has driven the course, as closely as possible to the predetermined exact mileage of the course as we charted it, will win our grand prize.

It's one of the most popular events that we've ever done here at WBKR and we're excited to have the opportunity to bring it back. Plus, we're excited to unveil the official starting line location and start time for 2023.

This year's Road War will begin at Thompson-Berry Park in Owensboro and the first car will roll out at 5pm CST!

A huge shout out to Owensboro Parks and Recreation and the City of Owensboro for working with us on securing an amazing starting line for this year's event.

Now, in case you've never participated or you need a reminder, here's how the Road War works and what you need to do to get ready for it.

Step 1: Round up some friends that are good at solving clues and riddles.

Step 2: Decide who's going to drive your vehicle and which team members are going to be the problem solvers.

Step 3: Arrive at the official starting location of the WBKR Road War. All teams start from the exact same location (i.e. Thompson-Berry Park). There, we will zero out your trip counter, give you your first set of clues and send you out on a Halloween-themed, "haunted" adventure.

Step 4: Sign in at the starting line anytime between 4:30pm and 6pm. First car rolls out at 5pm and registration closes promptly at 6pm.

Pro tip- get in line early so you give you and your team more time to solve our clues and navigate the course.

Step 4: Attempt to solve the clues and drive our route exactly as we planned it.

Step 5: Do your very best NOT to make a wrong turn. The winners of the WBKR Road War will be the team that drive the course closest to the actual mileage of the course as it was designed.

Another pro tip- we measure down to the tenth of a mile.

Step 6: Save this date and time- 5PM CST, SATURDAY, OCTOBER 28TH, 2023! That's when the WBKR Road War officially returns.

HOW TO PLAY

a) WBKR Road War participants (from here on termed “Road Warriors”) must check in at the official Road War starting point (THOMPSON-BERRY PARK) anytime between 4:30pm and 6pm CST. At the official registration site, Road Warriors present valid drivers’ licenses, show proof of insurance and registration for the vehicle being used in the Road War, sign appropriate liability waivers (required of EACH team member) and have their starting mileage checked by Road War officials.

b) Upon completion of the check-in, Road Warriors will receive their first set of clues that will lead them along a predetermined road course. The WBKR Road War is NOT a timed or speed event (and observance of ALL traffic laws is STRICTLY ENFORCED). Road Warriors must be painstaking in their efforts to decipher and follow the clues for the course. Ultimately, the winning Road Warriors will be those who have followed the clues and have traveled most closely to the number of miles predetermined to be the exact distance of the Road War course.

c) Road Warrior teams will also be given an official Road War scorecard. At the beginning of the course, a WBKR race official will certify each team's starting mileage and return the scorecard to the team of warriors. Teams will keep those scorecards for the duration of the race and return them to WBKR officials at the finish location, where they will have the total miles traveled certified by a race official. Official scorecards must be used and duplicates or makeshift renderings will not be accepted. Teams losing their official scorecards will be disqualified from the event.

d) Because of the nature of the Road War, teams must do their best NOT to stray from the course for snacks, beverages, fuel, etc. Excessive travel will affect your final mileage totals. Participants should fuel up before the race and take advantage of food and drink pit stop opportunities along the course.

e) During the Road War, Road Warriors will encounter a series of checkpoints/pit stops where teams will collect additional clues that guide them along latter stages of the course. The final leg of the Road War will lead Road Warriors to the finish line destination, where each team will submit their final mileage to race officials (in the aforementioned manner) and the winning team will be declared. Teams must check in at the finish line BEFORE 10PM CST regardless of where they are on the course. ***Road War officials reserve the right to adjust this time accordingly based on performance and efficiency of teams on course.***

VERY IMPORTANT- Teams should download the WBKR app. It's possible that alerts will be sent to teams exclusively through the app during the actual event.

f) The grand prize champs will be the team of Road Warriors with the mileage total closest to the actual predetermined distance of the course. In case of a tie, a random drawing will be held to determine the winning team. Because of the nature of the event, all Road War vehicles MUST be equipped with functional odometers.

g) GPS devices and road maps are permitted, but likely will not help.

h) The WBKR/Halloween Havoc Road War is a rain or shine event.
