The Daviess County Fair is just around the corner, and soon we'll be riding rides, eating corndogs, and cheering on motocross racers. Like most county fairs, there will also be animal shows. Rabbits, poultry, lambs, goats, and more will all be presented by local 4-H Youth.

Our friend Jaxton Tierney and his family came into the studio to tell us all about the 4-H and FFA Youth Scholarship Livestock Auction. The way it works is that kids and teens register to show one of their animals, and the public is invited to come and place their bids on them.

It's different than a regular auction in that the winning bidders will not take the animals home. Also, the money each kid raises doesn't just go straight into their pockets. They have two options to put it towards. It can be saved in a scholarship fund for planning life after graduation, or it can be spent on a 4-H project, whether it's a new animal, feed and supplies, pen upgrades, etc.

Jaxton told us that last year his chicken earned him enough money for a horse trailer and a rabbit. The horse trailer needs some work, but it will come in handy as one of his favorite animals to show is his goat.

I'm probably preaching to the choir when I say that 4-H is such an amazing organization for kids to be a part of. Hands-on learning develops young leaders to improve upon the four Hs: "HeadHeartHandsand Health."

All important values that will set them up for success and happiness in life. If that sounds like something you'd like to support, you are invited to participate in the 4-H & FFA Youth Scholarship Livestock Auction on Monday, July 21st at Curtsinger Hall.
