Charles Dickens couldn't possibly have known that his immortal A Christmas Carol would turn into the gift that keeps on giving for movie and TV writers a century or more later. And I'm not just talking about straight-up film adaptations. (I could talk about the motion capture version with Jim Carrey for days; I love it.)

Christmas Carol Adaptations

No, I mean the various TV sitcoms that have fashioned episodes around Dickens' iconic tale. But I'm also talking about, for example, Dolly Parton's Smoky Mountain Christmas Carol, which is now touring. Writers David H. Bell, Paul T. Couch, and Curt Wollan took the original framework and molded it into a musical adventure (Dolly, of course, wrote the songs) that's been delighting audiences all over the country. It recently made a stop here in Owensboro.

'An Old Kentucky Christmas Carol'

How about an adaptation that's transformed the holiday classic into a must-see attraction at My Old Kentucky Home in Bardstown?

It's more than just a performance. Once you enter the mansion, you'll be greeted by your "guide," Charles Dickens. The ghosts of Christmas past, present, and future will serenade you with holiday carols as you move from scene to scene. Talk about thinking "out of the box" when it comes to live theater.

'An Old Kentucky Christmas Carol' will run during the first three weekends in December, on both Saturday and Sunday each weekend. No doubt, the tickets will move fast.

Happy holidays, and have a merry Old English Christmas in Bardstown. And tell Jacob Marley I said, "Hello."
