Yesterday, we got to talking about smells that technically are yucky, but some folks seem to strangely enjoy. Like puppy breath, skunks, and even gasoline! One of my best friends LOVES the smell of her cat's nasty fish breath. I even have a couple of confessions to make myself if you keep reading. But why? Why isn't EVERYONE grossed out by offending odors?

Obviously, all humans are different. Some studies have shown that our preferences for taste and smell begin in the womb. Others believe that when someone favors the scent of, say, gasoline, it's because they are feeling a sense of nostalgia when they get a whiff. Reminding them of a family road trip, or summertime fun outside while neighbors mow their grass.

Not necessarily nasty, but when I step outside on a rainy fall day, I take a big, deep breath of wet leaves. I LOVE the smell of cold. Yes, I'd say at freezing temps, or below, there is a distinct scent that ironically gives me warm fuzzies. Molecules in the air slow down, pollutants and odors disappear, and the air is fresher. I call it "crispy" sometimes.

I have to confess, though, there was something very strange that I liked to sniff once upon a time. When my son was born, I LOVED the smell of his little sweaty feet after taking off his tiny socks. They smelled like...well...feet...but not gross grown-up feet. Maybe it is some kind of special pheromone that helps moms connect with their offspring?

I have no idea why that is a thing, but I know I'm not the only mom who felt that way! Some even love their baby's stinky milk breath. Kinda like puppies, I guess?

The Signature Smells of Owensboro & KY

I was just going to stick to Owensboro but then decided to throw it open to the rest of the Commonwealth.
