Dy-No-Mite! Ranking the 15 Best TV Theme Songs of All Time
They just don't make TV theme songs like they used to, do they? I am a kid of the 70s and 80s. If you ask me, that was the heyday of them. There are so many shows that I watched as a kid that had theme songs that have totally stuck with me as an adult. They're like ear worms, but not in the irritating, let-me-get-an-ice-pick kinda way.
So, to celebrate those classic TV tunes, I have put together my list of The 15 Best TV Theme Songs of All-Time. As you will see, the majority of songs on this list are from shows I was obsessed with as a child. Oh, you'll also see I threw in an honorable mention. I work in country radio, so I was compelled to do so by my inner Daisy Duke.
HONORABLE MENTION- GOOD OL' BOYS (from The Dukes of Hazzard)
Chalk it up to country music legend Waylon Jennings. His "Good Ol' Boys" was the perfect anthem for the Duke boys. I, like every other kid my age, dreamed of blaring it on the radio and driving around in our own General Lee.
#15- I'LL BE THERE FOR YOU (from Friends)
Full disclosure, I fell out of love with Friends after two or three seasons. However, I have to give credit where credit's due. That Rembrandt's theme song remains a TV classic. It still makes me want to find a fountain and jump in it with my friends.
#14- THE GAME OF THRONES THEME
Look! I get that there are some other epic instrumental TV themes. Miami Vice, anyone? The X-Files, anyone? The Price is Right, anyone? But, for me, this is my favorite instrumental. I love this show (all-time Top 5) and I am so obsessed with the theme song that I have set it as my alarm on my phone. I wake up to it every morning at 4am ready to set the day on fire. Dracarys!
#13- THE LAVERNE & SHIRLEY THEME SONG
If you're a member of Generation X, at some point in your life, you have walked down the sidewalk arm-and-arm with a friend singing this song. Don't tell me you haven't. I will kick you in your Schlemiel, your Schlimazel, or your Hasenpfeffer.
#12- THE ADDAMS FAMILY THEME
It's creepy. It's kooky. It's still finger-snappin' fun.
#11- THREE'S COMPANY
A comedy classic and that theme song is perfection. The musical banter between the male and female singers reflects all that banter in the show between Jack and his roommates. This TV theme can come and knock on my door anytime.
#10- THE LOVE BOAT THEME
I didn't go on my first cruise until I was in my 30s. I didn't have to. I grew up going a cruise every single week with The Love Boat. This theme, which is nearly 50-years-old, still feels 'exciting and new'.
#9- DIFF'RENT STROKES
The song that reminded us weekly that "Everyone's got a special kind of story" and that "Everybody finds a way to shine." Now, you may be thinking, "Whatchu talkin' 'bout, Willis?" You may want to know why this song isn't higher on my countdown. Here's why! I've got eight more powerhouse theme songs to brag about.
#8- THE GREATEST AMERICAN HERO THEME
Give it to Joey Scarbury. His song "Believe It or Not" was not only the theme song of a popular television show; it was a bona fide hit on the pop chart. It peaked at #2 on the Billboard Hot 100 and had me and all my friends believing we could walk on air.
#7- THE WONDER WOMAN THEME
Don't act like this song doesn't make you want to spin around in a circle, change clothes, and deflect bullets with your bracelets!
#6- THE CHARLIE'S ANGELS THEME
Once upon a time, there were three little girls who went to the police academy. And I was obsessed. Still am. I am 54-years-old and instantly want to flip someone over my shoulder or pull a gun out of my murse when I hear this theme song.

#5- THE BRADY BUNCH
Every child of the 70s heard this song and immediately imagined their own family's heads in a blue box. For my money, The Brady Bunch Theme remains the national anthem for blended families.
#4- THE FACTS OF LIFE THEME
I can't tell you how many times over the course of my lifetime that I have looked at a friend (in the throes of some overly dramatic crisis) and said, "You take the good. You take the bad. You take them both and there you have- the facts of life." This song still resonates in my Tootie.
#3- THANK YOU FOR BEING A FRIEND (from The Golden Girls)
Arguably, the single best sitcom in the history of television. It's 40-years-old and still stands the test of time. It's as funny and bold today as it was when it debuted in the mid 80s. Want to know how popular this theme song still is? See how many people around you know the words to it.
#2- THE JEFFERSONS
The soundtrack for anyone trying to make an improvement in their lives. Move on up, get your turn at bat, and finally get you a piece of the pie. We all have a little George and Weezy Jefferson in us.
#1- GOOD TIMES
It's not just the sitcom that gave us Florida, Janet Jackson's "Penny", the expression "dy-no-mite", and the hysterically acerbic neighbor Willona. Fun fact! Willona was played by Ja'Net Dubois, who co-wrote and sang this theme song with Ossie Davis. The Good Times Theme makes me want to sing, dance, and have, well, good times. For me, it's the absolute best TV theme ever. And, you saw my list. It's loaded up with indisputable classics. Ain't we lucky we got 'em?
