The Big Rivers Electric Corporation has been based in Henderson for decades but that's all about to change.

It was announced Wednesday that the non-profit cooperative, which serves some 118,000 members and employs 120 workers, would be relocating its headquarters from Henderson to Owensboro.

The City of Owensboro, Daviess County Fiscal Court, and Greater Owensboro Economic Development Corporation made the announcement.

What an exciting development for the city--one that will necessitate the construction of a new headquarters at 700 West 2nd Street downtown. According to a city press release, the project is expected to last between 18 and 24 months.

What's more, the Big Rivers headquarters move will have a huge economic impact--to the tune of over $100 million for the greater Owensboro region.

Here's the announcement from earlier today at city hall:

Big Rivers Electric Corporation is owned by three distribution cooperative members--Jackson Purchase Energy, Kenergy, and Meade County Rural Electric Cooperative. They're headquartered in Paducah, Henderson, and Brandenburg, respectively.

Coming in the midst of some of the most uncertain times we've ever faced, news like this is as welcome as it gets. It will be exciting to see what this move will do for Owensboro going forward.
