If weekends are made for getaways in your corner of the world, and you have gaps in your calendar this holiday season, then this might serve as a good "filler."

Christmas in Louisville

I could spend a lot of time writing generally about a holiday Louisville road trip, and it would be worthwhile (both the story and the trip). To begin with, Kentucky's largest city is a Christmas shopping mecca, and that might be enough. Then, there's Lights Under Louisville. You cannot go wrong on a slow jaunt surrounded by over a million lights arranged in clever designs beneath Derby City. But wait, I said I wasn't making this about the city itself, didn't I?

Christmas at Kentucky Kingdom

I think you're going to need to make a weekend of it when you add Kentucky Kingdom to the itinerary. Kentucky's most popular theme park finishes its season with a flourish, and that flourish also consists of more than a million lights...1.5 million, to be exact. Christmas at Kentucky Kingdom kicks off on November 22nd, and, well, it's beginning to look a lot like Christmas. (Hat tip to writer Meredith Willson.)

What to Expect at Christmas at Kentucky Kingdom

First of all, do not expect water rides. It's a painfully obvious statement to make, but just in case, there it is. Select other attractions will also be unavailable, but no matter. Look what will be.

In addition to all those spectacular lights, Christmas at Kentucky Kingdom will offer guests four different Christmas zones, an enormous Christmas tree and eye-popping light show, an interactive meet & greet with Santa Claus, and the largest snow tubing hill in Kentucky. (You might never get me off this thing.)

Louisville always makes for a great holiday season ingredient. The food, the lights, the attractions, and, yes, that snow tubing hill.

See? I can't get it off my mind.
