Broccoli Sold in KY, IN, and IL Recalled Due to Possible Listeria Contamination
If you have a bag of fresh broccoli in your refrigerator that you recently purchased at a Walmart in any of 20 states, you might want to get rid of it, to be on the safe side.
Broccoli Recalled KY, IN, IL and 20 Other States
The Food & Drug Administration has announced a voluntary recall by Braga Fresh after the organic produce company discovered a potential for listeria contamination in broccoli purchased at a Texas Walmart. The retail giant is the exclusive seller of ready-to-eat, pre-washed 12-ounce Marketside Broccoli Florets. So far, no illnesses have been reported, but, out of an abundance of caution, it wouldn't be a bad idea if you were to dispose of it.
Twenty states--including Kentucky, Indiana, and Illinois--have issued warnings about the broccoli. On a positive note, this specific bag carries a "best if used by" date of December 10th, 2024, meaning it is no longer on store shelves. However, some may have frozen the broccoli for future use, so it's best to pull it out of the freezer and toss it.
If you have one, check the bag for UPC code 6 81131 32884 5 on the back and Lot Code: BFFG327A6 on the front.
How is Listeria Harmful?
Healthy people seldom get sick from listeria, but the National Capital Poison Center indicates that is NO reason to not take it or this recall seriously:
<em>Listeria monocytogenes</em> is a bacterial species that causes foodborne illness in humans. <em>Listeria</em> infection can occur after consumption of contaminated meats, dairy products, and produce. Pregnant women, children, and people with compromised immune systems are at high risk for severe complications of <em>Listeria</em> infection.
