A few months after I secured my first driver's license as a teenager, the warm months arrived, and I got a warning from my dad about a certain driving practice. He flat out told me not to drive barefoot, and I used to remember him adding that it was illegal to do so.

Driving Barefoot

Over the years, though, after pondering that conversation while driving without my shoes, I concluded that I misheard him or experienced a solo version of the Mandela effect and heard it wrong.

Dad never lied. He was honest to a fault. So he wouldn't make up a law that didn't exist just to keep me from doing something he'd just as soon I not do. I dug into it and learned that it is not illegal to drive while barefoot in Kentucky. However, that doesn't mean your bare feet can't lead to an incident that would put you in a bind legally.

Is Driving Barefoot Illegal?

What's more, Thomas Law Offices confirms that there is neither a federal prohibition of barefoot driving, nor is there a state law to that effect. Fred Flintstone is therefore off the hook.

The Risks of Driving Barefoot

But the firm does seem to advise against it due to a potential lack of control of the vehicle; rubber soles provide more traction. There's also the issue of harm to your bare feet if you're in an accident. Of lesser legal concern (I'm guessing) is the possibility of discomfort over the long haul.

All of these recommendations or discouragements, if you will, are valid. But I'll admit to enjoying driving while barefoot. I don't do it in town, but I almost always kick off my shoes and socks (if necessary) on long road trips. Oh, and I just now located this on Facebook, and it makes a lot of sense.

I can't imagine driving while wearing flip-flops. I'd be far too paranoid they'd get caught on the brake or the gas pedal. And since I don't wear high heels, I have no idea what that's like.

I take all of Thomas Law's points to heart, but I like the feel of the road, via the car, on my feet. And I will always be careful.
