Eastland Mall in Evansville, Indiana is Proof Era of Shopping Malls Isn’t Over

While malls across the country are closing, Eastland Mall is thriving as a tri-state shopping destination. It's a great place to hang out with friends, grab a bite to eat, and shop til' you drop.

It's been widely reported through the years that shopping malls are declining. It's because the internet has changed the way we shop. While online shopping is much easier, I prefer to try on clothes, look for bargains, and make it a fun day. Who doesn't like some good ole' fashioned retail therapy? With not many malls nearby to choose from, we're lucky to have one close to home. I went on Saturday and was shocked at how packed it was. There were hundreds of shoppers all through the mall. The food court was packed, with no empty seats. Parking was at the back of the parking lot by 11 AM. I haven't seen so many people at the mall for quite some time, but it shouldn't be surprising. If malls across America are dying, Eastland Mall in Evansville didn't get the memo!

ARE SHOPPING MALLS IN AMERICA BECOMING OBSOLETE?

Before the pandemic, malls all across the country were already struggling to keep their doors open. According to a report from RetailWire, mall traffic has recovered strongly over the last two years. Simon Property Group, the largest mall owner in the U.S., ended the year with an occupancy rate of 94.9 percent for malls and outlets, up from 93.4 percent last year and just behind the 95.1 percent rate seen at pre-pandemic 2019’s close.

Business Insider added, In 2020, Coresight Research projected that 25% of the country's approximately 1,000 malls would close shop in the following 3-5 years. In April, analysts at UBS projected that 40,000-50,000 American retail stores would shut down by 2027. The decline of the American mall has left just 700 still standing. Soon there may be just 150 left.

Hopefully, Eastland Mall won't become another one of those statistics. We don't need another abandoned mall like in Owensboro.

EASTLAND MALL IN EVANSVILLE IS GOING STRONG

Whether you stop by to shop, hang with friends, exercise, or eat at the food court Eastland Mall is a shopper's paradise. It's worth the short drive from anywhere in the tri-state. Although Macy's, Dillard's, and JCPenney are great anchor stores, there are still over 100 stores and restaurants to enjoy when visiting the mall.
