Some of my favorite childhood memories are snow days. I'd go outside, dig, explore, and build entire snow families with no worry or care about how cold it was. Now, these days it's a different story.

I can't be out in the frigid weather for that long, but my son loves to get out there and my dogs love it even more! They could play out there for hours, but before they start, I make sure Rollins grabs some fresh clean snow so I can make snow cream while they run and roll around outside.

Snow Cream Recipe Ingredients

I like to use an easy recipe shared by Southern Living. Simple, but delicious and nostalgic. Here's what you need:

  • 1 cup milk, evaporated milk, half-and-half, or cream
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar
  • 2 tsp. vanilla extract
  • 8 to 12 cups snow

Gathering Snow for Snow Cream

Ideally, preparation for Snow Cream begins before the snow falls. If you can, place a metal bowl outside to catch the snow as it falls to the ground. That's the cleanest way to collect the star of this recipe.

If not, you can scoop freshly fallen flakes from a flat surface and only remove what is on the very top. Fluffy snow is best, be sure not to pack it down into your bowl. The snow we got last night is PERFECT for this.

Another tip is to make sure you collect more than you think you need.  Bring the snow inside AFTER you've combined the ingredients listed above. You'll gradually add your snow to the liquids until it reaches "thick milkshake consistency." You can always tweak the flavoring to your liking! I add some colorful sprinkles on top for fun. Then, all you have to do is holler for the kiddos to come inside and enjoy!
