The other day I looked out the patio door and saw Ellie trying to power-jump the tree in the backyard.  They say "white men can't jump" but this white dog has pogo sticks for legs.  I had no idea what she was doing until I realized she had treed an innocent and defenseless baby bird.  The bird was perched on the bark and in no immediate danger, so I decided to grab my iPhone and film Ellie's leaps and bounds.  I don't mean to brag, but this dog is really cute and oddly athletic for her size and stature.  Well, my plans to video and capture this adorable glimpse of nature nearly turned into a snuff film when the bird made an ill-advised run for it.

Seriously?!  That was like a episode of When Animals Attack.  There is good news though.  After trying to land on the side of my house then falling into the mulched landscaping (and narrowly escaping the biscupids and insicors of a suddenly rabid Cujo wannabe), the baby bird fled to safety underneath my deck.  If that bird had been mauled while I was filming it, you might as well just have shipped me to the mental ward.  I was trying to make a Disney nature film . . . not a remake of Faces of Death.
