No one should ever have to worry about where their next meal will come from or rationing Ramen to make it to payday, but unfortunately, that is a harsh reality a lot of people face. That is why I am so thankful for Empty Bowls of Owensboro and the work they do in raising money for organizations that are doing their part to end hunger in the area.

Their annual soup dinner at the Riverpark Center is always a popular event. Thanks to generous donors, this creative fundraiser brings the community together in a really special way. You get to choose a one-of-a-kind bowl made by local artists, enjoy a variety of soups, and then take it home as a reminder of the gift you gave and the people who are helped by your support.

It is a great night of live music, a unique silent auction, and updates from last year's recipients, Beverly's Hearty Slice and Our Lady of Lourdes Backpack Ministry. They split the $22,000 raised last year, so representatives from the organizations will be present to share how those funds served the people of Owensboro who needed them most. For the first time, there will also be a half-pot drawing.

St. Benedict's Homeless Shelter 2025 Empty Bowls Recipient

This year, the Empty Bowls recipient is St. Benedict's Homeless Shelter. They are Daviess County's only emergency shelter exclusively for men and are celebrating their 20th anniversary this year.

St. Benedict’s offers nightly housing for up to 64 individuals, along with hot meals, showers, laundry, and clothing. Residents also receive case management services focused on long-term stability through access to employment, healthcare, addiction recovery, and permanent housing. The shelter operates three transitional homes, including one dedicated to veterans, and serves around 500 individuals annually, providing over 46,000 meals each year.

Mark your calendars for November 6th. Tickets go on sale this Wednesday for $20, and they typically sell out. For more information, visit the Empty Bowls Facebook page or website. It's officially soup season, so this is a perfect way to give back to the community and have a great evening.
