June is National Shelter Cat Month.  We have an amazing rescue story of a former Kentucky Barn Cat turned City Kitty and he's living his very best life.

WHY IS JUNE NATIONAL SHELTER CAT MONTH?

I'm sure you're wondering just like me why June is the magical month for sweet rescue kitties.  I looked it up and here's what I found on nationaltoday.com;

The National Adopt a Cat Month was formed by American Humane 45 years ago in order to encourage people to stop buying cats and, instead, adopt them from shelters. The month selected for the adoption drive was June, since a lot of cats tend to reproduce during this month — and, since a cat can birth up to seven kittens, it’s not a surprise that most of them often end up in animal shelters. Seeing how shelter cats are deprived of a loving environment, American Humane kickstarted this adoption month in the hopes of spreading awareness regarding the rescuing and adoption of cats.

Angel here and three years ago I headed out to the door to the Daviess County Animal Shelter to do a story on their $5 Cat Adoption Fee.  At the time the shelter had an excessive amount of sweet kitty cats and needed to get them adopted.  Our Digital Manager, Ashley, and I were pumped we would get to see all the animals.

Little did I know this big orange and white tabby in the video was going to become part f our family.  He had already decided his fate he just had to convince me to convince my husband it was happening LOL.

If you know my husband, Joe, you know the conversation went something like

Hey baby can we adopt a kitty cat from the shelter?

Ok whatever you want honey?

Let's take the kids to look this weekend!

Next thing you know here we are loading the family up in the SUV and venturing off to the shelter.  At first the kids want to get to know all the cats.  Mr. Cheddar wasn't having any part of that.  He knew he belonged to our family and he made sure to leave a last impression.

When our visit was all said and done he was in a box and on his way home with the Welsh family.

NOT JUST A CAT HE'S FAMILY

Cheddar's very first encounter when we got home was meeting our doodle, Layla.  She was pumped to have a new friend, he was not.  He hissed ran down into our basement and we didn't see him for three days.

After he warmed up to the idea of a big happy dog he was perfectly cool with her and they have been the best of friends since.

In fact Cheddar fell completely in love with our kitty, Ms. Jingles, from day one.  Not in a romantic way but in a way where he took care of her.  Ms. Jingles was getting on in years and I think he knew this.  He was a teenage kitty, strong and on the go all the time.  He watched over her outside and when she couldn't clean her own back and head anymore we would find him doing it for her it would literally melt your heart to watch him love her.

He even loves our other doodle, Lilly.  Lilly is a lot and I mean a lot to take in.  She is fiesty and fun and goes a million miles an hour.  Cheddar slaps her around and even lets her clean him when she is feeling sweet.

HIGH MAINTENANCE KITTY

When we got Cheddar we asked them if they knew where he came from and they told us he was brought in with several other cats from a farm.  He is an incredible and I mean an incredible hunter.  We are gifted at least one dead animal a day on our porch or driveway and he has taught our newest kitten to hunt like him.

With all this said he can be a bit of a diva when comes in after a long night of hunting.  He is routine.  He has to eat and snuggle up to us and make sure we know he loves us.  He is especially fond of my husband.  Like Joe is HIS PERSON!  He loves his cat daddy HA.

Any other time of the day if he isn't hunting he is mainly sleeping, eating, sleeping some more, and well sleeping.

PURRRFECTLY PATIENT

One of the things that tells me we picked the purrrfect kitty, he loves our daughter, Charlotte.  She was very little when we adopted him and she has picked him up, carried him around, and squeezed him a little too tight a few times and he just tolerates it.  In fact, he adores her.
