In June, BOGO Fireworks, for the first time in its history here in Owensboro, was in a brick and mortar location. Prior to 2024, Joni Autry operated her successful fireworks business under a tent located in a variety of places on the south end of Frederica Street.  For years, that tent was situated in the side parking lot of Office Depot behind Panera Bread Company. It later moved behind Towne Square Mall. Even later, Joni set up shop in front of Towne Square Mall. But, this year, she managed to move BOGO inside the former Stay Fit location at J.R. Miller Boulevard. Now, she's doing the same thing with her popular Halloween business- Halloween Havoc.

Earlier this week, Halloween Havoc opened for the 2024 'witching' season adjacent to the Stay Fit "BOGO" location. Halloween Havoc is now open on the other side of that building in what used to be Family Home Video. After a couple of years on the front side of the gutted Towne Square Mall (and before that next to Buffalo Wild Wings at Towne Square North), Joni is enjoying the possibilities that come with the new location at 1212 J.R. Miller.

First of all, the visibilty is tremendous. That intersection- because Parrish Avenue essentially connects the east side of Owensboro to its west side- is perfection. Halloween Havoc now sits at the intersection of J.R. Miller and Parrish. The motorists passing by that location, at least for the next two months, are going to experience some chills and thrills as they drive to and from work.

There's also a tremendous amount of available space inside. Of course, that space is now filled with one of the Tristate's biggest collection of costumes, masks and Halloween party favors.

LOOK: How Halloween has changed in the past 100 years

Stacker compiled a list of ways that Halloween has changed over the last 100 years, from how we celebrate it on the day to the costumes we wear trick-or-treating. We’ve included events, inventions, and trends that changed the ways that Halloween was celebrated over time. Many of these traditions were phased out over time. But just like fake blood in a carpet, every bit of Halloween’s history left an impression we can see traces of today.
