The Harlem Globetrotters Are Bringing a New Rivalry to Owensboro

Want to know what earworm has been resounding through my brain for the better part of the last hour? If you read the headline, then I think it's safe to say you know the answer. Yes, it's "Sweet Georgia Brown." And, naturally, I’ve been whistling it the entire time.

I dare anyone to write about a Harlem Globetrotters appearance in their hometown and not have that pervasive melody occupying space between their ears.

That’s right, the Harlem Globetrotters are returning to the Owensboro Sportscenter on Sunday, December 20th, at 1 p.m. This visit is part of the new Rivalry Tour, which promises a different game and more ways for fans to take part.

What’s New on the Rivalry Tour

According to the Globetrotters’ tour page, the Rivalry Tour will feature new challenges and a new lineup of opponents alongside the Globetrotters’ longtime rivals, the Washington Generals. Fans may even become part of the show, with some invited onto the court and others joining in from their seats.

The experience starts before the game with a free pregame tip-off party for everyone attending. Fans who want more time with the team can purchase premium experiences, including early on-court access, a chance to join the players just before the game, or a seat on the Globetrotters’ or rivals’ bench.

I have a particular soft spot for a Globetrotters visit to Owensboro. When they came to town in 2019, I got to suit up with the team—and they let me keep the uniform.

I’m fairly certain “Sweet Georgia Brown” followed me home that day, too.
