Believe it or not, it's almost time to start thinking about heading back to school. Growing up, I remember that getting a school or sports physical was just part of the routine every summer. Along with new notebooks and a fresh pair of tennis shoes, there was always a doctor's appointment to make sure everything was good to go. Looking back, not much has really changed!

Health First Community Health Center is once again making it easier for families to check those important items off the list by hosting its annual Back-to-School Health & Wellness Days.

Special event days are scheduled at three locations:
Providence – Wednesday, July 22
Princeton – Thursday, July 28
Owensboro – Thursday, July 30

Appointments are available from 8 a.m. until 5 p.m. and are required. Families can reserve a spot by calling 877-667-7017.

These events are about more than getting a quick checkup. Children can receive school and sports physicals, well-child exams, immunizations, and other back-to-school health services while enjoying games, activities, and a fun atmosphere. Every child who attends will also receive free school supplies to help start the new school year.

Health First's Calhoun, Clay, Henderson, and Morganfield offices will also provide all back-to-school health services, even though they won't be hosting dedicated event days.

A well-child visit is one of the best ways to make sure children are healthy and ready for the school year. Providers check height, weight, hearing, vision, blood pressure, and overall development while giving parents a chance to ask questions and discuss any concerns. It's also the perfect time to make sure required immunizations are up to date before classes begin.

Health First accepts KCHIP, Medicaid, Medicare, and most major insurance plans. A discount program is available for those who qualify.

If your child doesn't have health insurance, ask about KCHIP. Many Kentucky families qualify for free or low-cost coverage and don't even realize it. For more information or enrollment assistance, contact Tiffany Lindsey at (270) 667-7571 or stop by any Health First Community Health Center location.

The first day of school has a way of sneaking up on all of us. Taking care of physicals and immunizations now can make those last few weeks of summer a little less hectic and help kids head back to the classroom healthy, confident, and ready to learn!
