Have you ever heard the old saying, "You never miss the water until the well runs dry." When I was a kid, I fixated on that old saw once I got its meaning. From there, it was a lesson in taking people and things for granted.

The First Tri-State Sports Car 'In the Sky'

Something else I fixated on when I was a tyke was a series of commercials for Bennett Motors in Evansville. The tagline was always, "Where the Corvette sits high in the sky." The old dealership was located on North Heidelbach and updated those Corvettes until it permanently closed in 2018. A few years later, in 2021, the final Corvette came down.

Audubon Chrysler -- Where the Dodge Viper Sat High in the Sky

I was reminded of that iconic sports car when another one was removed from its lofty perch on Wednesday. Talk about not missing the water until the well runs dry. That's what I'll be feeling when I drive down U.S. Highway 41 in Henderson and I won't be seeing Audubon Chrysler's Dodge Viper.

Why the Audubon Dodge Viper Has to Come Down

The legendary sports car has been "hovering" over busy 41 traffic for years and has sort of served as a de facto "Welcome to Kentucky/Henderson" greeting for folks coming south across the twin bridges. Even though production stopped on the Dodge Viper in 2017, motorists have grown accustomed to seeing the red 1994 edition proudly announcing Aubudon Chrysler since it was placed on the sign in 1996. Only once in the last 28 years has it come down, and that was for reconditioning. That was 15 years ago, and so it's time for another tune-up, and you can certainly understand why.

Now I have to wonder where that old Bennett Motors Corvette went.

LOOK: See how much gasoline cost the year you started driving

To find out more about how has the price of gas changed throughout the years, Stacker ran the numbers on the cost of a gallon of gasoline for each of the last 84 years. Using data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics (released in April 2020), we analyzed the average price for a gallon of unleaded regular gasoline from 1976 to 2020 along with the Consumer Price Index (CPI) for unleaded regular gasoline from 1937 to 1976, including the absolute and inflation-adjusted prices for each year.

Read on to explore the cost of gas over time and rediscover just how much a gallon was when you first started driving.
