We hear it all the time, but it's true. Heroes don't always wear capes. Sometimes they wear whatever it is teachers wear. Sometimes it's a nurse's uniform or a doctor's white coat. Often, it's military garb. And sometimes heroes work at a convenience store, are in the right place at the right time, and put others' needs first.

Circle K Worker Becomes a Hero

If you've ever visited the Circle K store on Highway 41 North in Henderson, the one on the strip, then you've probably seen Jermaine Johnson once or twice. I have; I thought he looked familiar. But that day I got gas or a beverage or whatever, I had no idea I was in the presence of a hero. And Jermaine probably didn't know he was going to be one, but that's what has happened.

Recently, Jermaine noticed that a vehicle at the gas pumps had caught fire. That's when the Marine Corps veteran leapt into action, grabbing the fire extinguisher. However, the device could not get to the flames under the hood. So he got into the car, shifted it to neutral, and pushed it away from the pumps and the station awning, preventing a potential disaster.

Community Spotlight Award

Jermaine's bravery and quick thinking have now been recognized by the Henderson Police Department with the Community Spotlight Award, which recognizes employees, residents, and organizations for bravery, exceptional service, or contributions to the community.

Sounds like Jermaine Johnson checked off all those boxes on his way toward keeping the city safe. Previous Community Spotlight Award recipients are recognized on the City of Henderson's Facebook page.
