With Winter here and the Holiday season in full swing, there are many fire hazards that come with this time of year. The Owensboro Fire Department is working hard to keep all of us safe and healthy. This includes sharing tips to avoid needing to call them for help in the first place.

It's Wicked Important to Stay Safe From Fires

There's no doubt that the movie of the moment is the film adaptation of the popular (pardon the pun) musical Wicked.

The World Wide Web is going wild with parodies and funny videos of people using songs from the show. I think it just makes sense to combine Defying Gravity and other lyrics from the musical with safety advice. "It's wicked important" to avoid fire incidents.

Holiday Fire Safety Tips

Here's what OFD asks that we keep in mind over the next several months.

  • Inspect your lights every year before using them. Toss out any strands with frayed or pinched wires FOR GOOD. And remember - don’t link more than three strands together.

  • We want you DANCING THROUGH LIFE this holiday season so if you use a real tree, water it every day! A dry tree can burn very hot, very fast.
  • It’s a very POPULAR decision to leave your tree at least 3 feet away from fireplaces, radiators, space heaters, candles, and heat vents.

Another pro tip is to always plug your space heaters directly into the wall. SOMETHING BAD may happen if it is plugged into a power strip or extension cord.
