Indiana Lead-Foot Drivers? Consider Yourselves Warned
I'll admit it. I have a lead foot. But it's not THAT leaden. I like to kick it up to what I feel I can get away with on the highway; I don't tempt fate in the city. And, actually, I'm not sure I'm fond of calling it "tempting fate" when I push my vehicle's speed up past the limit; I'm a safe driver. But, for lack of a better term, and all that...
But now, here comes the big HOWEVER. Well first, when I drive beyond the speed limit (and we all know I'm not alone), I don't ever let it get to 10 miles per hour above the limit. I will stop at nine if I even get THAT far. I will never pop my speed limit up to 11 miles per hour, or more, above the limit. That's what I'll call a "best practice," going forward, for anyone driving in the Indianapolis metro.
Indiana Speeding Fines
Indiana's fines for speeding may vary based on the county in which you were issued a citation. Speedregstoday.com gives us this Hoosier State overview:
The fines for speeding in Indiana typically range from $150 to $500 for a first offense. It’s important to note that these fines do not include additional court costs and fees that may also be imposed. In addition to the fine, receiving a speeding ticket may also result in points being added to your driving record, which can lead to increased insurance rates.
Indiana 'Safe Zones'
As part of its "Safe Zones" program, the Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT) has installed speed cameras in northeast Indianapolis in the I-465/I-69 construction zone. If you go 11 or more over the limit, you could incur a fat fine and not even know it until you get something in the mail.
Regarding major metropolitan areas, I've driven through Nashville and Louisville more often than any other. I used to hate Louisville traffic and was comfortable driving through Nashville. The opposite is now true. Nashville's rapid growth has lead to more and more traffic on its many interstates, and it's like taking part in the Indianapolis 500, sometimes.
Oh, well, how ironic. Anyway, Music City could use a little of what Motor City is having these days.
