Indiana’s First Buc-ee’s Coming to Greenwood Near I-65

Buc-ee's fever is set to spread across Indiana, as the Hoosier State is about to have its own for the first time. Greenwood, Indiana—immediately south of Indianapolis—will be the location, so look for Interstate 65 traffic to increase accordingly in the southern part of the Indy metro.

And that last part isn't entirely tongue-in-cheek. While Buc-ee's has developed an enormous following, not everyone in Greenwood is thrilled about its addition to the landscape.

Whenever I've visited Buc-ee's—I've been to the two Kentucky locations in Smiths Grove and Richmond—I've been reminded, to a much lesser extent, of what it's like parking at Disney World. There's the carefully directed route onto the property, the massive rows of gas pumps—which can be overwhelming up close—and the hordes of eager visitors waiting to get their hands on Beaver Nuggets or a brisket sandwich.

And, yes, the traffic.

In a town the size of Smiths Grove, and even in a considerably larger community like Richmond, the heavy traffic can be daunting but somewhat manageable. I've never visited a Buc-ee's in a population center the size of Indianapolis and its surrounding communities.

Indiana's First Buc-ee's Is Coming to Greenwood

On September 21st, Greenwood city officials approved plans for a new 74,000-square-foot Buc-ee's near the Worthsville Road exit on I-65. The project passed the Greenwood Common Council by a 7-2 vote, but public comments surrounding the decision centered largely on two concerns.

Local school officials are worried about traffic during peak school hours, with two schools located a mile or less from the proposed Buc-ee's site. Some residents also say the development runs counter to the city's goal of keeping the area around the interchange primarily residential, with limited commercial development.
