Illinois Dumbest Law Targets Bicycle Daredevils—Seriously
There's no good way to go to jail, but this would have to be among the worst. There is a real Illinois law that targets bicycle daredevils and cyclists are sure to be the most ticked off.
What is the dumbest law in Illinois?
According to Reader's Digest, there is a real law on the books in Galesburg that was obviously created by a lawmaker who was jealous of individuals with mad bike riding skills and tricks. American Legal Publishing's code library says it reads like this:
"73.15 TRICK RIDING.
No rider of a bicycle shall remove both hands from the handlebars, or feet from the pedals, or practice any acrobatic or fancy riding on any street.(Ord. 82-854, passed 4-1-1982)"
But wait, there's more. Check out this additional bike requirement in Galesburg:
"73.17 LAMPS AND OTHER EQUIPMENT ON BICYCLES. Every bicycle when in use at nighttime shall be equipped with a lamp on the front which shall emit a white light visible from a distance of at least 500 feet"
My eyes! My eyes! If you're driving down a street in Galesburg and are suddenly blinded by the lighthouse-level lamp on the front of an oncoming bicycle, now you know why.
