Your $2 Bills Could Be Worth Thousands
If you have any $2 bills stashed around the house, you might be in luck. There's a good chance that they are worth hundreds, even thousands of dollars!
There is probably a lot of loose change and cash stashed away around the house. You never know, some of that might be worth more than just face value. When I was a kid, I used to collect coins and cash in hopes that one day, I might stumble upon something that would be worth a lot of money. One thing that I had, and might still have, is a $2 bill. I know for a fact that my kids have a few stashed away. So, when I get home, I am going to have to do some digging because those $2 bills might be worth some serious cash.
What $2 Bills are Worth A Lot of Money?
The $2 bill was first printed in 1862, but these bills were never widely circulated, making them feel rare even when they weren’t. You might think of $2 bills as rare still, in 2025, but there are actually millions currently in circulation. That being said, some $2 bills are worth hundreds or even thousands of dollars to collectors, and you could be holding one right now.

The website bankrate.com outlined which $2 bills hold extra value and how much they could be worth. It should be noted that the condition of a $2 bill significantly impacts its value. Collectors classify bills into two broad categories: circulated (bills that were used in transactions) and uncirculated (bills that have not been used in transactions). Here are the ones collectors are looking for most:
Red Seal Notes (1928–1963) — Older $2 bills with a red Treasury seal can sell for $100–$500 depending on condition.
Star Notes — These bills have a small star next to the serial number, indicating a rare printing replacement. Some are worth up to $1,000 or more.
1976 Bicentennial Series — Most are only worth face value, but uncirculated or misprinted versions can bring in $20–$50 or more.
Low or Fancy Serial Numbers — Bills with repeating, sequential, or palindromic numbers are favorites among collectors and can be extremely valuable.
