New Study Reveals Indiana’s Deadliest Roads for Drivers

They say that Indiana is the "Crossroads of America," but it sounds like these roads are the deadliest in the state.

A new study, conducted by an insurance agency known as iSelect, examined 129,825 fatal crashes across all 50 states and Washington, D.C., breaking them down by road type: interstates, U.S. highways, state highways, and local streets. The study breaks down the most dangerous roads in each state as well. While Indiana is full of roads that offer great scenery and make for a great Sunday drive, we also have a few sketchy roads throughout the state too. Whether they are very narrow, curvy, crowded with other drivers, or just full of potholes, I'm sure we can all think of a few roads that we tend to try to avoid for one reason or another.

Now, when it comes to Indiana, 33% of fatal crashes occur on state highways, followed by 28% on local streets, 22% on U.S. highways, and 17% on interstates. What's really interesting here is that Indiana ranked fourth in the nation for the number of deadly crashes on local streets. So, which roads in Indiana are the most deadly? Let's check it out.

Indiana's most dangerous roads

The study from iSelect showed data over five years. During that time, Indiana has recorded 4,183 crashes. The 10 most dangerous roads in the state are:

I-65: 93 total deadly crashes
I-80: 62 crashes
U.S. 31: 56 crashes
I-69: 48 crashes
I-70: 48 crashes
U.S. 41: 48 crashes
U.S. 20: 43 crashes
Indiana 37: 41 crashes
I-465: 37 crashes
Indiana 67: 33 crashes

Of course, we know that when it comes to road safety, there are several factors that come into play. Weather and road conditions can play a key role here, but the behavior of other drivers is a big factor. Distracted driving, aggressive driving, and other dangerous driving behaviors all play a role in why these are the deadliest roads in Indiana.

Outside the major cities, the Hoosier state is full of tiny little towns you've probably passed through on your way to one of those cities. Most of them are likely 100 to 150 years old, or older, and have been around far longer than the large metropolitan areas such as Indianapolis, Fort Wayne, South Bend, and Evansville. Typically, they were started by early settlers who found their way to the state and decided to make it home. Eventually, others would join them, and a community was formed. Over time, as the surrounding areas grew, most of them were folded into those areas and governed by the nearest city or county's governing body officially making them "unincorporated," meaning they did not have their own formally organized municipal government.

A scroll through Wikipedia's long list of unincorporated communities in Indiana shows several of them have names that by today's standards would be considered weird, quirky, or just downright right funny. These are my 40 favorities.
