If you think you live in a community where everyone knows everyone, imagine living in the smallest town in Indiana.

It probably comes as no surprise to you that the Hoosier State's capital, Indianapolis, is the largest city in the state.  With a population of more than 880,000 people, Indianapolis is the 16th largest city in the country. While it is a no-brainer that Indy is the biggest city, I'd be willing to bet that you most likely don't know what the smallest town in Indiana is. Chances are, you have most likely never heard of it before, unless you live nearby.

What is the Smallest Town in Indiana?

If you come from a small town as I do, you might feel like everyone knows everybody. However, if you come from the smallest town in Indiana, you might be related to everyone in town. A good chunk of them probably live in the same house as you. According to World Population Review, the smallest town in Indiana happens to be a little place called Stillwell. Now, Stillwell is a CDP located in LaPorte County, Indiana. In case you read that and wondered what a CDP is, basically, it means that it is an unincorporated, named community defined by the U.S. Census Bureau for statistical purposes, rather than a legally incorporated municipality.

How small is Stillwell? World Population Review says that as of 2026, Stillwell has a population of 12. Not much is going on in Stillwell. They do have a Dollar General and an elementary school, though. If you are into the outdoors, nearby is the Kingsbury State Fish and Wildlife Area. But it's not far from La Porte and Lake Michigan, so that's a plus.

It's kind of interesting to see the breakdown of the largest to smallest cities/towns in Indiana to see where your hometown ranks. You might be surprised. Check it out by clicking here.

16 Indiana Towns with Dirty-Sounding Names

A majority of these towns were given their names in the mid-to-late 1800s as settlers making their way across the country found unclaimed plots of land and decided to make them their own. While I imagine they thought the names they came up with were innocent, and perhaps a tribute to something in their lives, pop culture has warped our minds to the point since then that we can't help but think of something about the town that was never intended by its founders. Take a look at this list. I guarantee there's at least one name that will make you chuckle.
