Young Boy in Indiana Fighting Rare Illness Needs Your Help
A 10-year-old boy from Pike County, Indiana, is currently hospitalized at Riley Hospital for Children in Indianapolis as he fights an aggressive and rare illness.
Many families across the tri-state are busy preparing for the holiday season, but for one family in Pike County, they have something else on their minds. Earlier this month, Pike County natives Sara and Zack McQueen had a healthy, active 10-year-old boy at home named Zaden, who loves racing motocross and playing baseball. However, a couple of weeks ago, Zaden began developing cold and virus symptoms, which would ultimately lead to a stay in Riley Hospital's Intensive Care Unit (ICU).
Pike County 10-Year-Old Battles Rare Illness
I spoke with the family, who noted that Zaden first began experiencing symptoms a little over two weeks ago. The illness eventually developed into a rare condition known as Reactive Infectious Mucocutaneous Eruption (RIME). It's a severe mucocutaneous adverse reaction that primarily affects children following a bacterial or viral respiratory infection. The condition causes painful ulcers both inside and outside the mouth, as well as on the eyes and skin.
How Long Has Zaden Been in the Hospital?
Zaden has been hospitalized since Thursday, Nov. 21, but has been fighting illness since the 11th. In addition to the ulcers, the family reports that he has since developed a second pneumonia in his left lower lung. Zaden was most recently placed in the ICU to receive the oxygen and antibiotics needed to treat the new pneumonia. Below is an update from the family on his condition:
"Currently, his biggest challenges are healing the ulcers, the second pneumonia, keeping his eyes from getting any worse to avoid an amniotic membrane transplant, and getting his strength built back up to get home and back to normal life."
The High Costs of Unexpected Illness
Having known this family for many years, I can personally attest not only to their commitment to their community but also to their kindness. Sara owns and operates Meraki Salon & Spa in downtown Petersburg, and Zack is a diesel mechanic at Columbia Rebuild Center for Peabody.
Sara is currently at her son's side and is unsure when she will be able to return to work. Meanwhile, Zack has been traveling back and forth to Indianapolis. They’ve had multiple urgent care visits, an ER visit, and an ambulance ride to Riley’s—none of which are cheap.
How You Can Support Zaden’s Recovery
Since Zaden's unexpected stay in the hospital, the entire family's lives have been turned upside down. Luckily, there is a way you can help. Sara's sister, Holly, recently set up a GoFundMe to help lessen the financial burden the family is feeling. According to the GoFundMe page, they are hoping to raise at least $10,000. If you feel led in this season of giving to donate to this family in need, you can do so by clicking HERE. The family also notes that they appreciate prayers.
"We are grateful for our small community's outpouring of love and support. We just ask that you continue to pray," the family said.
UPDATE, Nov. 29, 2024: Good news! Zaden went home on Thanksgiving Day and is in the process of recovery. The family appreciates all the thoughts, prayers, and support.
