Illinois Erases $1.1 Billion in Medical Debt for 500,000+ Families

More than half a million Illinois families are waking up to life-changing news: their medical debt is gone.

Governor JB Pritzker announced that the state of Illinois has erased $1.1B in medical debt, helping more than 500,000 families across Illinois.  And here's the part that makes it even more special: there was no application process required.

Illinois partnered with Undue Medical Debt, a nonprofit, to make it happen.  The organization works by identifying qualifying residents and purchasing outstanding hospital debt in bulk for a fraction of the cost, then forgiving it entirely.  That means eligible families don't have to fill out paperwork, make calls, or even know they were being considered.  If they qualify, the debt is simply wiped away.

So who qualifies?  Did you?

Individuals must either have a household income below 400% of the Federal Poverty level or have medical debt that equals 5% or ore of their household income.  For many families, especially those hit with an unexpected surgery, ER visit, or chronic illness, that kind of debt can pile up fast and feel impossible to escape.

Pritzker didn't hold back when talking about rising healthcare costs.  He blamed the Trump Administration's budget policies for driving up expenses nationwide, including in Illinois.

“The cost of healthcare in this country is ridiculously high, and while President Trump’s budget makes it even more expensive, Illinois is standing up to protect its people,” Pritzker said.
