I have come to realize something about myself lately, I am a romantic. It is hard not to be when you have grown up witnessing some of the most genuine and lasting love right in your own family.

The Couple That Changed How I See Love

My Godparents have been together for 61 years. Not 61 years of perfect, easy, breezy love either. 61 years of real life. Building something together. Raising a family. Getting through the hard moments. And still looking at each other the same way they always have.

They were together five years before they even got married and went on to build a beautiful family of three kids, six grandkids, and two great grandchildren. It is an honor to be their great niece and goddaughter. To grow up watching them, always together, always choosing each other, is something I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I Had to Ask Her, How Do You Do It?

Of course I did, I called her up and asked her, "How do you do it?" And without missing a beat she said:

"The best part of our marriage for the past 61 years is the man I married. He is the best part of the marriage. He does everything. Our family. Everything."

If that does not make you believe in love I do not know what will.

A Celebration We Will Never Forget

Last year we threw them a huge 60th wedding anniversary party right where they got married. They renewed their vows and there was not a dry eye in the room. It was a day built on love, faith, and emotion. A true celebration of two people who have spent the most years, months, and days of their lives with one another and are still completely in love today. It is a day I will never forget for as long as I live.

Her Advice for a Lasting Marriage

When I asked her what advice she would give to couples today she kept it simple and real. Be honest with each other, work your arguments out, and trust each other. Three things. That is it. Sixty one years and it really does come down to those three things.

Love Like This Still Exists

In a world of dating apps and relationships that seem to come and go, it is so refreshing and hopeful to know that love like this still exists. That two people can choose each other every single day for over six decades and mean it more with every passing year.

They are one together. Their story is special. And I am so grateful I got a front row seat to all of it. ❤️
