JCPenney, which has been a national anchor store for Owensboro's Towne Square Mall since the mall opened in 1978 is closing in the coming weeks.

The company filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection back on May 15th. The Texas-headquartered store as of Thursday reopened 500 locations. They had 860 stores when they filed for bankruptcy.

JCPenney is closing 154 locations including five other Kentucky stores in Campbellsville, Danville, Hopkinsville, Maysville, and Middlesboro.

With JCPenney closing, Towne Square Mall has lost its last national anchor store. Sears closed in 2017 and Macy's closed earlier this year. Closures nationwide will begin on June 12th.
