You know those things that happen in life, and you think, "Oh yeah, that makes perfect sense?" That's exactly what ran through my head when I saw the announcement that my friend, Brooklyn Johnson, is now the new Executive Director of the Joe Ford Nature Center. Such a perfect fit

See? Look at her in her natural habitat. OK, maybe she wasn't BORN in the wild, but she sure feels at home there. For her bachelorette party, one of her main requests was that we be outside. As a compromise for the gals who weren't sold on sleeping in a tent, we explored Rock City in Chattanooga. Total blast.
While most brides plan a tropical getaway, Brooklyn and her husband used those honeymoon funds on a camper to travel to different state parks and enjoy the beauty of nature. She's always going on weekend trips to explore and learn. I'm so excited that she will now be at the helm in Daviess County, where folks can do the same right here at home.
Brooklyn shared, "Stepping into the role of Executive Director at the Joe Ford Nature Center is truly an honor. I’m excited to move into nonprofit work and build on the incredible foundation Joe and Grace Ford created." And she said they have been scheming and dreaming up lots of plans.

"From new children’s programs to community events—and I can’t wait to grow opportunities that connect people of all ages to nature. My goal is to continue their legacy of education, curiosity, and community involvement centered around nature for generations to come.”

I'm excited to see how Brooklyn uses her passion for the outdoors to make The Joe Ford Nature Center a special place. She's already making things happen. "Local artist Sarah Higdon has completed a stunning new mural in the kids’ room at the Joe Ford Nature Center," Brooklyn said, "Sarah beautifully expanded upon the artwork originally created by another local artist, filling the space with color, creativity, and a touch of the great outdoors."

They just hosted a really fun (and hilarious) Bigfoot hunting event, which turned into a Harry and the Hendersons meets magazine centerfold situation. "We would absolutely love to have more volunteers and events at the center." Brooklyn hopes to start hosting more clubs and groups for meetings or events. They even have an indoor space for colder months.
You can follow them on Facebook or call Brooklyn at 270-240-1300 for more information if you want to help nurture or enjoy The Joe Ford Nature Center. For those of us who remember Mr. Ford coming to our schools or visiting him at the museum, let's keep it alive for generations to come.

The Signature Smells of Owensboro & KY

I was just going to stick to Owensboro but then decided to throw it open to the rest of the Commonwealth.
