I've always been a fan of state parks and national parks and sometimes feel they are underrated as vacation destinations go. But they shouldn't be, and those who visit and spend time have the TIME of their lives.

Kentucky really knocks it out of the park; our state park system is seemingly unrivaled...oh wait a minute. NOT "seemingly." Kentucky IS unrivaled in this very "summery" category. When I learned that the Commonwealth has more full-service state resort parks than the other 49, I wasn't really surprised. You could spend MONTHS vacationing at all 17 of them.

Before I share with you what TripAdvisor tells us are the highest rated state resort parks in Kentucky, let me explain a distinction. The TripAdvisor list contains ALL state parks, but state RESORT parks feature a lodge. With that in mind, let's get started.

5. Pine Mountain State Resort Park

Perhaps the most attractive feature at Pine Mountain State Resort Park, located in Pineville, is the Chained Rock Trail.

But there's golf AND mini-golf, the Laurel Cove Amphitheatre, and a beautiful lodge complete with a full-service restaurant. The breathtaking Appalachians seal the deal.

4. Pennyrile Forest State Resort Park

Located in Dawson Springs, Pennyrile is a swimmer's, boater's, hiker's, and photographer's delight. Fisherman's Rock is the reason for that last entry. However, I don't think you could go wrong pointing your camera anywhere.

3. Carter Caves State Resort Park

Carter Caves have always been a draw as you head deep into eastern Kentucky on Interstate 64. But the caves aren't the only draw, so take the exit and spend a couple of days. The park is gorgeous, and you won't regret it.

2. Natural Bridge State Resort Park

Natural bridges aren't terribly uncommon in Kentucky, but this is the granddaddy of them all. Whether you hike or ride the sky lift, you MUST get to the top of Natural Bridge and soak it all in. Two things: Even though I said this is a very "summery" category, FALL visits are encouraged at Natural Bridge. Also, pets are not allowed in certain areas of the park.

1. Cumberland Falls State Resort Park

Floating cabins, beautiful trails, the Pinnacle Knob Fire Tower, Eagle Falls Trail, and...oh, what am I missing? Ah yes, those beautiful falls. Take a look through the lens of one of the best drone videographers in the business.

Kentucky leads the league in amazing state resort parks, so plan accordingly. Hit them all and do your OWN ranking.
