When it comes to Thanksgiving dinner, my eyes always become bigger than my stomach. Some of my all-time favorite side dishes are mostly relegated to Turkey Day. It's a shame about that, too. (And yes, of course, that can easily be corrected.)
But it's for that reason that I load up my plate with way more than I can finish. Leftovers to the rescue, right? Several years ago, I recorded a video of myself joining my late mother to make corn pudding.
It's an iconic dish in our family, and now it's up to me to do it justice. (My corn pudding isn't bad, if I do say so myself.) Unfortunately, I don't find lists of favorite Thanksgiving dishes that include corn pudding. And, to be honest, when I mention it to some people, they think it sounds gross. Pity.
However, all is not lost. The side dishes I have found on such surveys are all favorites, as well, even if I've never had two of them for Thanksgiving dinner.
America's Favorite Thanksgiving Side Dishes
To no one's surprise, stuffing is the overwhelming choice according to a map published by Newsweek and courtesy of Campbell's. Mashed potatoes get a lot of love, too, but, oddly enough, they have never been on my family's Thanksgiving dinner table. Neither has macaroni and cheese, which seems to delight New Yorkers and Floridians more than anything else. It also delights this host of YouTube's "Sip and Feast."
Even though sweet potatoes or yams are nearly as traditional as the turkey itself, only four states show it the most love. If you're a sweet potato lover, you'll want to bookmark this.
As for Kentucky and Indiana, it's stuffing or dressing all the way in the Commonwealth, with Hoosiers preferring the mash. And, by the way, this may seem blasphemous to some, but my favorite stuffing is store-bought Stove Top. No joke. Love it.
Here's the bottom line for me, personally...I have never eaten a Thanksgiving side dish I didn't love, so it is all good. This exercise is simply for fun, and it looks like we covered everything.
Hey, wait, where's the green bean casserole?
