Kentucky leads the U.S. in the year-over-year rise of unemployment insurance claims, according to new federal data. The increase is being attributed to recent layoffs in both the public and private sectors, as well as ongoing issues with processing delays in the state’s unemployment system.

UNEMPLOYMENT CLAIMS IN KENTUCKY

Kentucky now ranks #1 in the U.S. for the largest year-over-year increase in unemployment claims, and #8 in the nation when adjusted for population size. With the 8th-highest claims per 100,000 people in the labor force, the WalletHub study reveals not just a temporary spike, but a disproportionately high rate of job loss affecting workers across the state. There's a lot of work to be done to improve the lives of Kentuckians.

STUDY METHODOLOGY

To identify where unemployment claims are decreasing the most, WalletHub analyzed data across all 50 states and the District of Columbia, comparing changes in initial unemployment claims over several key benchmark weeks. The study also factored in the number of claims per 100,000 people in the labor force, providing a more accurate picture of how states are performing relative to their population sizes.
