Kentucky Rolls Out Mobile ID for Driver’s Licenses and Real IDs
I, for one, am very happy to have run across this piece of news because it reminds me I need to update my driver's license this month. Yes, I realize that's nothing you need to add to your calendar app, but it does provide me a segue into today's topic.
Mobile ID
To loosely quote Bob Dylan, the IDs, they are a'-changin'. As of May 7th, 2025, anyone needing to board an airplane for a domestic flight or enter a military base or other federal facility must have a Real ID rather than just a standard driver's license. This, however, does not mean you can't get one now. (That had been a source of confusion for some.)
Now, for the sake of convenience, Kentucky has launched the all-new Mobile ID, and that means exactly what it sounds like it means. You may now download a digital version of your driver's license or Real ID and have it on your mobile device. With the increase in popularity of tap pay, this was a next logical step.
How to Get Your Mobile ID
To secure your Mobile ID, you'll need to download the Kentucky Mobile ID app, register your phone number, take a picture of the front and back of your ID card, and then load a live selfie. Convenience on the hoof.
However, your Mobile ID should not replace your physical ID card, and with good reason.
You can't present a digital version of your proof of insurance at the DMV, and you can't hand an officer of the law your phone if you get pulled over.
Enjoy your newfound convenience, but make sure that ID card is handy, too.
