My goodness, what an absolute monsoon we experienced this past weekend here in Kentucky. In a historic weather event, areas of the state received 3-7 inches of rain as rivers and streams rose rapidly. Photos of high waters and landslides looked horrible with cars and homes submerged.

Shout out to all of the first responders who worked hard to make sure people stayed safe. Sometimes the flood waters can be deceiving looking more shallow than they really are and cars get stuck trying to pass through. I also saw our local firefighters rescuing families stuck in their homes as the waters got higher.

Approximately 1,000 rescues were performed and 39,000 homes were left without power across the state. If you or someone you know experienced damage to their homes and are unable to stay there, certain Kentucky State Parks are opening up to displaced individuals and families.

I wish there were more Western Kentucky locations, but it looks like some of those parks are on this list of parks that are temporarily closed due to weather:
  • Nolin Lake State Park
  • Paintsville Lake State Park
  • Fort Boonesborough State Park Campground
  • Cumberland Falls State Resort Park gift shop
  • John James Audubon State Park
