Don’t Look Up to Find Kentucky’s Largest Building Because It’s Underground
Although living in a big city has never sounded appealing to me, I don't mind visiting. After all, there's always something to do, and most places stay open later. The old saying, "It's a nice place to visit, but I wouldn't want to live there," springs to mind.
When I was a kid, I would press my face against the car window, staring at all those magnificent skyscrapers as we drove through large metropolitan areas. At that time, I dreamed of living amongst them. Not so much, anymore, even if city skylines can be quite beautiful.
If you search for a certain city's largest building or the largest one in a given state, you're probably going to think it's one of those skyscrapers, like I did. But if you do that search in Kentucky, it's not a skyscraper you'll find. The largest building in the Commonwealth is underground.
Louisville Mega Cavern
Yep, the Louisville Mega Cavern is Kentucky's largest building. Like me, you're thinking, "But...it's a cave, not a building." We're both wrong. The Mega Cavern is man-made, enormous, and, consequently, qualifies as Kentucky's largest building.
And since it's considered a building, I cannot disagree. I've been there for Lights Under Louisville at Christmas, and as a building, it puts every other one I've been in to shame.
Louisville Mega Cavern History
It began as a mine in the 1930s, and then, when visions of commercial lucre began dancing in the heads of the powers that be, crews poured 42 years into blasting out the rock to create one of Derby City's most popular destinations, a destination, by the way, that encompasses nearly 100 acres or 4 million square feet.
Take that, any random NFL stadium you can think of.
