Kentucky’s ‘Singing Bridge’ Is Closed — Here’s What’s Happened
I could kick myself for missing out on an opportunity a few weeks ago when we were returning from vacation. We cruised through Frankfort to check out that magnificent cemetery where Daniel Boone is buried, but we forgot to visit the Singing Bridge. When I realized it, I was NOT singing a happy tune.
Now, before we go any further, let's have a song:
Why is it called the singing bridge? Well, I think you heard it. Because the driving surface is steel grating, you hear a humming sound when you drive over it. But these days, Frankfort's Singing Bridge is without a "voice." Here's why it has been muted.
The Closing of Kentucky's Singing Bridge
Subject to frequent inspections, the Singing Bridge has now been closed after the most recent inspection revealed deficiencies that could prove dangerous to drivers. As of Friday, August 30th, the popular landmark will be closed as crews work to repair "significant structural deterioration that affects the bridge’s weight-carrying capacity," according to Frankfort Emergency Management's Facebook page.
A Close Call in the Singing Bridge's Recent Pass
Back in 2021, the bridge was already closed for repairs when a marina that had broken loose due to heavy flooding floated down the Kentucky River and barely cleared it:
With no timeline for the completion of the needed repair work, the Singing Bridge--also a pedestrian bridge--will force commuters, especially those taking kids to and from school, to find alternate routes.
The Frankfort Singing Bridge serves about 3,400 motorists a day.
