Kroger Company Announces 60 of Its Stores Will Close Over the Next Two Years
My fingers are crossed that my favorite Kroger store will not be on the chopping block, but I have no control over that decision. Obviously.
Kroger Closing Stores
It's weird when you have every reason to assume a national chain is thriving, only to hear an announcement declaring
" target="_blank">the closure of several of the chain's locations. I can't imagine there would be a good reason to close any of the Kroger stores in my hometown of Owensboro, Kentucky. I hope they're all safe when all is said and done. I take great pride in my tattered Kroger Plus Card, which I've had for, I know, 20 years.
All three Owensboro locations have big fan bases, and that's probably because of how they're spaced out. Again, though, the corporate bigwigs who make these calls have the numbers in front of them, and we don't.
Kroger's Financial Statement
Here's what the company's 2025 first-quarter earnings statement says with regard to the announced closures...
In the first quarter, Kroger recognized an impairment charge of $100 million related to the planned closing of approximately 60 stores over the next 18 months. As a result of these store closures, Kroger expects a modest financial benefit. Kroger is committed to reinvesting these savings back into the customer experience.
Before we go any further, an impairment charge is the difference between a company's initial value and its current value. For example, if a business is worth $8.5 million, and then, after certain divestitures, its price comes down by $5 million, the impairment charge is $3.5 million.
Kroger says that employees affected by the shuttering of these 60 stores will be offered opportunities in other stores. As of right now, the names of those stores have not been revealed.
