Surprising Data About KY, IN Egg Prices Relative to Other States
Do your eyes pop out of your head when you see the price for a dozen eggs these days? Mine used to, but, unfortunately, I've grown accustomed to seeing the higher numbers. Paying $1.99 a dozen seems like a distant dream at this point. But despite the fact we're "shelling" out more for one of our most common dietary staples, we here in Kentucky and Indiana could have it a LOT worse.
Egg Prices
While we are lamenting forking over between four and five dollars for a dozen eggs, we are not saddled with regional issues other states are facing. I began my deep dive into the "yolk" of it all when I saw this graphic.
After zeroing in on that big number in California, I found this from ABC News that details the specific issues that have plagued our most populous state with regard to egg prices.
The Most Expensive Eggs
In casual conversation, I've heard folks blame the bird flu for the high prices everywhere. But that doesn't seem to be the issue EVERYWHERE. While I appreciate Chris Tuck's hard work, I sought out World Population Review, and their data brings that average price down. It's still high, but that Facebook figure was probably pulled from one or more specific locations in southern California.

The Cheapest Eggs
I find it interesting that WPR's info reveals that the ten states with the highest average egg prices are spread out all over the country. Then again, the ten states with the CHEAPEST average prices are too.
It's nice to see Kentucky, Indiana, and some of our neighbors on this list. It also makes me realize I was getting a great deal on eggs when I paid $1.99, as this chart indicates average egg prices in the Commonwealth were $2.83 before "eggflation."
Clearly Kentucky isn't being hit as hard as others, considering it has the second lowest increase on this list. Still, we're paying much more than we did, and I'm looking forward to the time eggs become far less egg-spensive.
