Owensboro’s Legion Park Will No Longer Host ‘Holiday in the Park’
A beloved holiday event in the City of Owensboro has apparently come to its close. Yesterday, city officials shared the news that Holiday in the Park, which has resided at Legion Park in the middle of town for decades, is no longer. This statement was shared on the City of Owensboro's official Facebook page- "As we transition away from the beloved Holiday in the Park (Legion Park) after many wonderful years, the City of Owensboro will elevate its holiday offerings with an expanded display and festivities for Hometown Christmas."
Hometown Christmas is a relatively new event in Owensboro's downtown district. According to the official Facebook statement, officials plan an "increased display of holiday lights" there.
So, what is going to happen to all of the displays normally housed at Legion's 'Holiday in the Park?' The City of Owensboro is going to be partnering with Daviess County Fiscal Court to donate many of those 'iconic displays' to Panther Creek Park, which hosts an annual (and very popular) drive-thru Christmas lights display. You'll have to wait a year to see those displays though. The Legion Park fixtures won't be incorporated into the Panther Creek show until 2025.
As for Legion Park, it won't be a totally 'Silent Night' there. There will be some holiday decorations in the park (primarily around the shelters) and a Christmas tree on the JR Miller Boulevard side of the park.
As for the City of Owensboro's holiday plans, the Owensboro Parks and Recreation Department has vowed "to spread holiday cheer across the city. Several other local parks will showcase festive light displays, including Ben Hawes Golf Course, Jack C. Fisher Park, the Parks Administrative Center, and the Edge Ice Center." There will also be some fun seasonal family and friends photo opportunities at the Edge Ice Center and Smothers Park.
As for complete details about Hometown Christmas, organizers aren't quite ready to spill the candy canes about it. They've simply asked local residents to stay tuned! However, officials have shared this invitation and promise- "The City of Owensboro hopes that everyone will come out and enjoy the festive atmosphere that makes Owensboro a truly special place during the holiday season."
