Soccer, whether it's men's or women's, continues to gain popularity as the years go by. The fact the US Women's National Team has won the last two World Cups doesn't hurt either. Louisville has had a professional men's soccer club since 2014, and coming soon, a National Women's Soccer League team

As of 2012, when the NWSL formed, there are nine teams on its roster. And by the way, these teams are at the top level of competition. Louisville City FC is part of the United Soccer League which is the second tier of men's competition.

Over the weekend, USWNT midfielder and Cincinnati native Rose Lavelle made an appearance at the University of Louisville where she visited with the Cardinals women's team and she also spoke to the media. Lavelle almost attended U of L, she opted for Wisconsin, but she has maintained a relationship with U of L head coach Karen Ferguson-Dayes.

As of now, there are no midwest NWSL teams. Louisville would be the first and would be one of nine cities with both men's and women's professional teams.
