Macho Man Randy Savage’s Surprising Kentucky Connection

We love old school wrestling in the Maddox household. I would definitely say my husband, Michael, is the biggest fan under our roof, having grown up watching the glory days of the WWE.

I thought Michael was the end-all, be-all source of Macho Man Randy Savage information. After all, he is his favorite, and we watch his old promos on a quarterly basis. However, I learned a fun fact that my husband didn't even know! So I thought I would do a public service and share in case there were other fans curious about Macho Man's Kentucky connection.

In 1984, when Vince McMahon approached Randy Savage about joining World Wrestling Entertainment, Randy was a fresh-faced newlywed. He had married his one and only Miss Elizabeth Hulette after a wedding in her mother's backyard in Frankfort, KY.  The happy couple had met two years prior while working at a gym in Lexington, KY.

Miss Elizabeth was an announcer for International Championship Wrestling matches, so Randy tried to get her on with the WWE as a commentator. McMahon had other plans. She became Macho Man's manager and love interest that kept the drama going with pretend love triangles and all kinds of shenanigans.

They were eventually "married" on screen in 1991 in the SummerSlam "Match Made in Heaven" ceremony. Of course, instead of "I Do," he said, "Ooooh Yeah!"

Now, their real-life relationship was just about as tumultuous as their on-screen romance. Substance abuse and passionate personalities were not a good mix, and they eventually parted ways personally. They worked together in the ring again, though, before Elizabeth unfortunately passed away in 2003.

The Capital City Museum in Frankfort has an exhibit dedicated to Miss Elizabeth and her legacy. With dresses and memorabilia, and they even host drive-in nights to watch television and wrestling match highlights.
