Mesker Park Zoo Welcomes New Tiger Who Loves to Play Hide & Seek
Mesker Park Zoo & Botanic Garden is welcoming a new amazing animal for visitors to fall in love with. Her name is Luna and she is a Sumatran Tiger.
Sumatran Tiger Conservation
Unfortunately tigers like Luna are considered critically endangered. That's why it's so important for them to be in safe places like Mesker where they can be taken care of. Their habitats are disappearing and they are vulnerable to poaching. Animal Curator, Shannon Irmscher said, "Our dedicated team has been working tirelessly to ensure Luna’s transition to her new home is as smooth and comfortable as possible"
What Are Sumatran Tigers Like?
The smallest of all the tigers, they are also more standoffish. I like to think it's just because they enjoy a good game of hide and seek! After all, how else are they going to sneak up on their prey? The also sleep anywhere from 18-20 hours a day, and who wants their beauty sleep to be interrupted? Luna is only two years old and was born in another ACA (Association of Zoos & Aquariums) accredited zoo.
Where Can You Find Luna at Mesker Park Zoo?
Zoo officials have revamped the former tiger habitat combining it with the old sun bear habitat and connecting the two with a bridge. This gives Luna more room, and the bridge has quickly become Luna's favorite place to sunbathe. If you don't see her on the bridge, be sure to check both sides of her habitat. She may just be playing hide and seek!
